## About this work

Jules Tavernier painted this in 1878, aged 34. It is now at The Met in New York.

### How it was made

- **Oil paint.** Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.

American, born France, 1844–1889; born in Paris; died in Honolulu, Hawaii

Tavernier trained in Paris and moved to the United States in the early 1870s, travelling west for Harper’s Weekly to record frontier life. Settling in San Francisco, he painted the landscapes of California and Native American ceremonies, and was a member of the Bohemian Club. In 1884 he moved to Hawaii, where he became known for dramatic scenes of the volcano Kīlauea and was a leading figure among the painters later called the Volcano School.
