## About this work

Log-built houses and sheds cluster at the water’s edge, figures gather near one of the buildings and a boat is drawn up on the bank, with three goats nearby, as the title notes, and trees rising behind. Timber buildings of this kind were a novelty to Dutch eyes, and Everdingen encountered them on his travels through Scandinavia in the 1640s. Back in the Netherlands he turned such motifs into a long run of small etchings, valued for their crisp linework and their sense of a remote, northern way of life.

Allart van Everdingen made this (probably c. 1645/1656), aged about 24. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

### What you’re looking at

The image shows a landscape with figures near a body of water. There are buildings made of logs, people gathered near a structure, and trees in the background. The style is detailed with precise linework, shading, and hatching. The color palette is monochrome, emphasizing light and shadow.

### How it was made

- **Etching.** The artist draws with a needle through a waxy coating on a copper plate, and acid bites the exposed lines. The plate is then inked, wiped and printed under pressure, so the line keeps the freedom of drawing.

Dutch, 1621–1675

Everdingen trained in Utrecht and Haarlem and in 1644 travelled to Scandinavia, where he sketched the mountains, forests and waterfalls of Norway and Sweden. Back in Haarlem and later in Amsterdam, he made these northern scenes his speciality, introducing the rushing waterfall into Dutch painting and influencing Jacob van Ruisdael. He was also a prolific etcher of landscapes and made a well-known series illustrating the fable of Reynard the Fox.
