## About this work

This portrait by French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres depicts the young count Amédée-David de Pastoret at 32 years old. One of several paintings he commissioned from Ingres, the portrait highlights the nobleman’s status and swagger. Posing confidently in his finest garments and wearing a medal of the Order of the Legion of Honor, he gazes directly at the viewer with a stern expression.

### How it was made

- **Oil paint.** Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.

French, 1780–1867; born in Montauban; died in Paris

Ingres trained under Jacques-Louis David and won the Prix de Rome, then spent nearly two decades in Italy, absorbing Raphael above all. He became the champion of line and classical tradition against Delacroix’s Romanticism, and later directed the French Academy in Rome. Though he thought history painting his true calling, he is now most admired for his portraits, both his polished oils and the precise graphite drawings he made of visitors in Rome and Florence.
