A square is bordered at left and at the back by houses, at right by a garden wall. A tree is shown in the center. An oxcart and a plain wagon are near it.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

Walter Shirlaw drew this in 1875–80, aged 37. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
